I made Landscapes between 2019-2021 in various bedrooms I moved between in Melbourne/Naarm, my family home in Dromana/Boon Wurrung and the Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio. They all come from different places, times and draw from pretty diverse aesthetic pallets. Admittedly, I wouldn’t say that for each piece I had any strong sense of a particular landscape guiding me through the process, or that I was trying to capture anything specific. I would basically just start with a small idea and see where it ended up taking me. One thing I did notice, however, was that each time I opened up any given session after having spent some time away from it, I would strip back more and more layers, ultimately seeing how much I could get away with removing from each piece whilst retaining its essence. The ‘Landscapes’ theme and invented names of places were realised later on in the process as a means to thread together an otherwise mixed bag of tracks and ideas. It also helped me cull a lot of other material which didn’t fit with the theme. It’s a mode of listening for one to opt in to, if one wishes to.
